Budget 2024 debate: Gan Thiam Poh on guarding against threats and ensuring employment of older workers
The lessons from the Ukraine war have given Singapore a new perspective and definition of warfare, highlighting Singapore’s vulnerability, the need to invest in R&D and support innovations in technology, as well as to look into green energy solutions. MP Gan Thiam Poh highlighted this observation in Parliament on Monday (Feb 26). He also urged the Government to provide more job search support and matching for older people who wish to continue working, especially those who have been retrenched. He also wanted to know if the Government has details of those who have been retrenched in the last two years and how many are still unemployed. He wanted to know how the Government is helping workers who are actively looking for jobs, as well as detecting and minimising age discrimination in hiring practices.
