Budget 2024 debate: Mohd Fahmi Aliman on uplifting lower-wage workers
It is imperative to renew our commitment and resolve to uplift society, said MP Mohd Fahmi Aliman. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 27), he said there are sufficient opportunities and scope to provide targeted support to vulnerable workers, especially those in the lower-wage group. He said the best way to help workers cope with the rising cost of living is through better wages and better jobs. He stressed the need to ensure a fair and supportive work environment that fosters stability and acknowledges the contributions of all workers. Mr Fahmi urged the Government to consider “ringfencing” the low-wage group against the problems that stem from the practice of resetting benefits during contractual changes. He also stressed the need to recognise the length of service at the workplace as it is crucial in ensuring fair and consistent treatment in terms of wages and benefits. This approach promotes job stability, motivates employees and enhances overall job satisfaction, he said. It also contributes to a more equitable and supportive work environment, underlining the principles of fairness and recognition for long-serving individuals, he added. Enforcing these measures would foster a positive work culture, he said.
