Budget 2024 debate: Ong Hua Han on inclusiveness and social participation of persons with disabilities
Social participation refers to the active engagement of individuals in all aspects of society, while the Forward Singapore exercise mentions inclusiveness as a shared value that must be upheld. But what does inclusion or social participation really mean? This question was raised by NMP Ong Hua Han in Parliament on Monday (Feb 26). Sharing feedback from an online survey conducted with 136 young persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Singapore, he pointed out seemingly common negative experiences among participants with autism when it came to interactions with non-disabled peers. He also noted that more can be done to improve the public transport experience for wheelchair users and highlighted a lack of acceptance for those with invisible disabilities. He added that PWDs should be made to feel empowered and safe to exercise and play sports in shared spaces, and that more can be done to facilitate home ownership among PWDs.
