Budget 2025 debate: Hazel Poa on government’s ‘band-aid approach’ to tackling cost of living
Budget 2025 continues to help Singaporeans deal with the rising cost of living through vouchers and credits, which are “ad hoc benefits” dependent on the availability of surplus tax revenues and at the discretion of the government of the day. In contrast, the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has proposed systemic measures to reduce the cost of living and set Singaporeans on the path to financial independence. Its proposals are also based on a better balance of social and economic considerations. NCMP Hazel Poa made these points in parliament on Wednesday (Feb 26). However, she said PSP will support Budget 2025 because Singaporeans need short-term assistance to cope with rising costs until structural changes are implemented. Ms Poa also made two suggestions to improve Singaporeans’ work-life balance - increasing the number of public holidays from 11 to 14 and enacting the right of workers to disconnect.
