Budget 2025 debate: Heng Chee How on advancing the interests of older workers in Singapore
The passing of the Workplace Fairness Bill into law is an important step in the fight against ageism and all forms of discrimination in the workplace, said Senior Minister of State Heng Chee How in parliament on Thursday (Feb 27), as he spoke up for advancing the interests of older workers in Singapore. He shared feedback from older professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) on how they faced significant hurdles in getting back into work after mid-life job blocks. These PMEs also indicated that new jobs often entail substantial downward adjustment of their pay and the job nature, he said. “This points to the need for more concerted efforts to help middle-aged jobseekers adjust and transit, so as to benefit from their continued contributions while managing the negativities,” added Mr Heng, who also spoke on the importance of training in the face of heightened uncertainty and economic challenges, as well as how to help middle-aged caregivers return to work.
