Budget 2026 debate: Foo Cexiang on full support for families with children
Singapore’s policies and structures must reflect the full weight of society's support for children, regardless of the circumstances of their parents, said MP Foo Cexiang. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday (Feb 25), he highlighted four groups of children who should get more support. Firstly, for children of unmarried parents, it is time to stop the policy differentiation between children of married and unmarried parents in benefits like grants and subsidies. Secondly, children of non-working mothers should have access to additional subsidies for childcare and after-school care. The third group is children with special needs; Mr Foo called for means testing for subsidies to be removed. For the fourth group - adopted children - he urged government agencies to work towards streamlining the adoption process significantly.
