Budget 2026 debate: Jasmin Lau on building a Singapore that is confident and ready for AI

18:35 Min

AI is here and its possibilities are endless. So, it can improve Singaporeans’ lives, but they must ensure they are always in control of it, not the other way round. This is how Singapore will build not just a smarter economy, but a wiser and more confident society, said Minister of State for Digital Development and Information and Education Jasmin Lau in parliament on Tuesday (Feb 24). She said the government will ultimately sharpen the focus of education towards the capabilities and qualities that AI cannot replicate. It will “systematize” hackathons to help students gain AI experience and create lower-risk, structured ways for SMEs to experiment with AI, while shifting funding support beyond set-up costs. It will also develop robust, ethical AI governance frameworks.
