Budget 2026 debate: Poh Li San on risks facing ‘young seniors’

18:26 Min

A growing proportion of "young seniors" is at risk of slipping into the lower-middle income group and deep government intervention may be needed to prevent structural unemployment among this demographic, said MP Poh Li San. She called for more measures to help them stay employable and prepare well for retirement. These include co-funding compulsory retraining every 10 years from as early as age 30, raising CPF contribution rates and interest rates for the Ordinary and Special Accounts, and changing mindsets to nurture healthy, meaningful working lives. Ms Poh spoke in parliament on Wednesday (Feb 25).
