Budget debate 2022: Saktiandi Supaat on helping middle-income earners amid rising cost of living
Middle-income households require just as much help as lower-income groups to cope with rising costs, said MP Saktiandi Supaat in Parliament on Monday (Feb 28). He said that focus must be put on real wage growth in order to help Singaporeans cope with the rising cost of living in a sustained manner. His suggestions to do so included raising the salaries of frontline workers such as healthcare workers and adult learning educators, as well as having different qualifying salaries for foreigners across various industries. Mr Saktiandi also said that with an economy in transition and possible volatility in income, it would be useful to assess personal income tax based on a current-year, pay-as-you-earn basis.
