Singapore’s official recognition of e-sports is timely in light of its rapid growth; but recognition comes with responsibility, said MP Charlene Chen. She cautioned against normalising unhealthy screen habits, especially for youths who are already vulnerable. She suggested that publicly supported programmes set clear expectations on training hours, sleep and posture education, with measures to address concerning behaviours if they emerge. Dr Chen also called for fair and holistic evaluation for e-sports and mind sports Direct School Admission pathways, to ensure that less well-resourced families are not at a disadvantage. She spoke in parliament on Tuesday (Jan 13).
