Committee of Supply 2021 debate, Day 3: Rachel Ong on migrant workers’ living conditions, food safety

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed gaps in migrant workers’ living conditions, said MP Rachel Ong in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 2). She called for higher standards under the law to be extended to factory-converted dormitories (FCDs) housing fewer than 1,000 workers. For FCDs with cooking spaces, she urged a review of hygiene standards and person-to-stove ratios. Ms Ong also expressed concern about workers’ food safety. She asked if part of the workers’ levy could go towards providing safe and nutritious lunches.
