Committee of Supply 2021 debate, Day 3: Sylvia Lim on support for litigants with no lawyers

Litigants who do not have lawyers face difficulties in both normal times and during the pandemic. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 2), MP Sylvia Lim highlighted three main challenges and suggested ways the courts can better support litigants. Firstly, non-English speaking litigants could do with translations of court-issued documents. Secondly, there is a need for public buy-in of court procedures, with judges who have empathy and patience to explain issues to litigants in simple and vernacular languages. Thirdly, more can be done to support litigants amid challenges posed by COVID-19.
