Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 2: Liang Eng Hwa on whether multilateralism is still relevant

01:20 Min

Why does Singapore continue to place heavy emphasis on multilateralism? Should it focus more on bilateral and regional forums like ASEAN and the CPTPP and RCEP trade pacts, where it can "better galvanise action and make a real impact"? These questions were put forward by MP Liang Eng Hwa in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 3). He said multilateral platforms such as the WHO, WTO and UN had been "helpless and ineffective" in dealing with global crises, ending up as spaces for major powers to "grandstand" and "wield disproportionate influence".
