Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 2: Raj Joshua Thomas on halting exodus from legal profession

02:46 Min

For lawyers, stress from the job may be inevitable but stress from bosses and the work environment is not, said NMP Raj Joshua Thomas. He suggested that modules on leadership and management, recently made part of compulsory training for lawyers becoming partners, should also be made mandatory in the Continuing Professional Development programme for middle and senior category lawyers. Mr Thomas was speaking in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 3) about how to address the “exodus” of junior and middle category lawyers from the profession. He called for a return of the pupillage system and formal dinners that trainee lawyers were invited to attend, saying these traditions helped to build a sense of fraternity and “being part of an ancient and noble profession”.
