Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 3: Cheng Hsing Yao on reducing reliance on foreign workers

02:57 Min

Some jobs, such as those which require hand-eye-leg coordination, are difficult to redesign or replace with technology. Many of these jobs may not qualify as complementary but may lack Singaporean applicants. NMP Cheng Hsing Yao, who said this in Parliament on Friday (Mar 4), pointed out that there may be scope to take a differentiated approach to improving productivity, apart from tightening access to foreign labour. He asked the Government to consider a "deeper dive" into the nature of the work of various sectors to quantify the limits in improving productivity and implement differentiated and targeted policies.
