Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 3: Louis Chua on legislating protection for gig workers
In Parliament on Friday (Mar 4), MP Louis Chua asked if legislation will be introduced to protect the rights of gig workers and give them at least a minimum level of benefits and safety nets such as insurance and work injury compensation. He also asked if efforts could be made to ensure they earn “at least a fair wage”, with reference to locals working part-time earning at least S$9 per hour under the Local Qualifying Salary. Mr Chua said the cost burden of any changes would fall on “relatively better-off consumers” who regularly use private-hire ride and food delivery services.
