Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 3: Melvin Yong on workplace safety
Hold developers and main contractors jointly liable for poor workplace safety practices of sub-contractors working on their sites - this suggestion was made by MP Melvin Yong in Parliament on Friday (Mar 4). He noted a rise in workplace fatalities last year, along with official data showing that smaller construction firms, many of them sub-contractors, have a higher workplace fatality rate than bigger contractors. Mr Yong questioned why good safety practices are not filtering down. He also asked for an update on the Return to Work Programme which was launched in 2017 to help workers who are injured at the workplace to get back to their jobs. He asked about the success rate, lessons learned and plans for enhancement.
