Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 3: Shahira Abdullah on Workfare Income Supplement for gig workers

01:45 Min

While welcoming the expansion of the Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) to help more workers, NMP Shahira Abdullah noted that payments depend on gig workers making MediSave contributions. She said many may not do so as their income is unpredictable and may not be enough to meet more urgent current needs. Dr Shahira asked if the Government could consider relaxing the MediSave requirement on a case-by-case basis so that gig workers struggling amid heightened inflation can benefit from WIS. In Parliament on Friday (Mar 4), she also asked if the Government would consider mandating or incentivising gig workers and platform companies to make CPF and MediSave contributions.
