Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 4: Sharael Taha on education for skills-based economy
How is Singapore’s education system preparing students for employment in a skills-based economy? MP Sharael Taha posed this question in Parliament on Monday (Mar 7). He asked if the Ministry of Education could consider longer-duration apprenticeship schemes for students from the Institutes of Technical Education or polytechnics instead of internships, so that they can learn job-specific skills and gain applied competency. Given the digital nature of jobs, he also wanted to know if students can be equipped with skills to be able to perform minimum “tech-lite” roles before they leave secondary school.
