Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 5: Ang Wei Neng on next step for land transport

07:44 Min

Singapore must capitalise on the work-from-home trend to permanently ease the commute load during peak hours. The Public Service can show the way by encouraging staff to continue to work from home on one to two days a week or allow staff to start work after the morning peak hours. MP Ang Wei Neng made this call in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 8). He also suggested giving a “significant” discount for off-peak commuting. He believes that with a combination of working from home, staggered working hours and financial incentives, there will be significant and sustained impact. He urged the Ministry of Transport to “cement” the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic to provide more pleasant rides on trains and buses. He also urged the Government to build trains ahead of demand, but it could consider reducing the number of trains deployed to save costs.
