Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 5: Melvin Yong on workforce resilience in transport sector

05:19 Min

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of Singapore's public bus workforce, said MP Melvin Yong. He proposed building a reserve public captain pool to fill urgent manpower gaps. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 8), he suggested training taxi drivers to be reserve bus captains who can be activated in an emergency. Noting that the pandemic has changed the way people live and work, Mr Yong asked about the long-term plans to grow the MRT network. He also wanted to know when construction will resume on Changi Airport's Terminal 5, if at all, and whether there will be changes to the scope of the project.
