Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Amy Khor on safety of workers on lorries

17:16 Min

New measures are being implemented to improve the safety of workers on lorries. All lorries will have to have some type of speed management device. Employers will be required to ensure drivers have enough rest. They will also have to deploy a “vehicle person-in-charge” for every lorry, who will sit next to the driver and be empowered to stop him from driving if he is deemed unfit. All lorries used to ferry workers will have to have rain covers on their rear decks. Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor announced the measures in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). She also spoke about what has been done to make the taxi and private-hire car sector more resilient and ready for technological changes like electrification, as well as the reimagining of Singapore’s road spaces, including enhancing the pedestrian and cycling experience in various areas.
