Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Leon Perera on reviewing pay and prospects for social workers
Social workers have seen an increasing scope of work in recent years and during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been “professionals battling a national crisis on the frontlines”. They should be adequately compensated, said MP Leon Perera in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). He noted that a “revolving door” of social workers is detrimental to the support offered to vulnerable families. Mr Perera asked for a review of social workers' compensation and progression pathways to increase retention in the sector. He added that recruitment should be expanded to reduce caseloads.
