Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Rahayu Mahzam on curbing salt consumption
Singaporeans are eating almost double the recommended daily limit of salt and measures will be introduced to curb this consumption. The three-pronged strategy involves sodium substitution, increasing the range of lower-sodium salt, sauces and seasonings, and public education. Parliamentary Secretary for Health Rahayu Mahzam announced this in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9) when she spoke on efforts to promote preventive health. On healthcare support for ethnic minorities, Ms Rahayu said the Health Promotion Board will partner the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth to establish a S$1.5 million Our Healthy Singapore Fund. It will support community volunteers and partners to develop programmes that are “closely in tune” with their communities’ needs, so as to be more targeted and effective.
