Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Xie Yao Quan on breaking stigma associated with mental health
Singapore has seen more open conversations acknowledging the stigma surrounding mental health and the key task is how to break that stigma, said MP Xie Yao Quan in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). He stressed the need to work on collective understanding of, and sensitivity towards, mental health. For example, people who seek help may not have clinically diagnosed conditions and conversely, those living with mental disorders may not display them outwardly. Mr Xie also touched on the importance of peer support, saying it can be the "first net" to catch and embrace people dealing with mental health challenges.
