Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Dennis Tan on mediating community disputes

03:30 Min

Mediation may not always work to resolve community disputes, especially if one party fails to turn up, said MP Dennis Tan in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). He proposed adopting court-based mediation where parties must first go through a judge- or court-led mediation when action is commenced at the Community Disputes Resolution Tribunals (CDRT). If the matter cannot be resolved amicably, the dispute will continue to be adjudicated under the existing CDRT process. Mr Tan also urged the Government to review the CDRT process to make it even more user-friendly for laypeople of different educational backgrounds, those who are not proficient in English as well as seniors. He added that parties should be required to declare at the outset that they have not engaged lawyers to guide them.
