Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Derrick Goh on increase in youth crimes and efforts to combat scams
The Central Narcotics Bureau reported that cannabis abusers arrested in 2022 climbed 71 per cent to 236; worryingly, over 60 per cent of those arrested were aged below 30 and some even as young as 14. MP Derrick Goh highlighted this concern in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). He noted that illicit habits that appeal to youth, such as vaping, could be gateways to other harder forms of substance abuse, as well as give rise to other social ills and offences. He wanted to know how the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) plans to deepen the engagement with all stakeholders involved to identify at-risk youths for more timely and effective intervention. On the topic of scam prevention, Mr Goh urged MHA to build on its success and further deepen international cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies and partnerships with stakeholders, such as platform providers.
