Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Edwin Tong on framework for appointment of senior judges
The current system for the appointment of senior judges has worked well for Singapore, said Second Minister for Law Edwin Tong. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27), he said it gives Singapore the flexibility to take into account the specific wishes of the judges when they reach age 65. Mr Tong said the framework also allows Singapore to strike a good balance between the different factors at play. These include providing younger judges with the opportunity to advance whilst retaining the experience of the older generation. It also allows for calibrations to be made to the composition of the Bench from time to time in consideration of whether it has the right mix of different skills sets in various different legal disciplines to meet the evolving needs of society.
