Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Heng Chee How on maximising contributions, improving experience, enhancing support for NSmen
From April, operationally ready national servicemen (NSmen) will only need to apply for an exit permit if they are leaving Singapore for 12 months or more, instead of the current requirement of six months or more. Announcing this in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27), Senior Minister of State for Defence Heng Chee How said the change reflects the growing mobility of Singaporeans, with many NSmen staying or working overseas for longer durations. He stressed that the change would not affect the operational readiness of the Singapore Armed Forces. Mr Heng also announced a new social and recreation hub in Changi to be built by the National Service Resort and Country Club. It will have chalets, sports facilities and other family-centric amenities. Mr Heng also outlined other key initiatives and priorities to maximise the contributions of servicemen, improve the National Service (NS) experience, as well as enhance recognition and support for NSmen. He said Singapore must build on the contributions of previous generations to safeguard its security and sovereignty. It must take care of its NSmen and ensure that NS is "well-positioned to safeguard our way of life into the future", he said.
