Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Liang Eng Hwa on globalisation and multilateralism

01:18 Min

The geopolitical stability that has helped to propel globalisation is now being challenged, said MP Liang Eng Hwa. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27), he noted that increasingly, countries are taking unilateral actions to decouple in the areas of trade, technology, investments and finance. Mr Liang warned that such a development would create more barriers for businesses to internationalise and is likely to hurt global economic growth. He wanted to know how Singapore views globalisation in the years ahead. He also asked if multilateralism will still be useful for Singapore when globalisation is under threat.
