Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Murali Pillai on use of technology by Home Team
In Parliament on Monday (Feb 27), Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin dealt with the expenditure estimates of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Following that, MP Murali Pillai spoke about the increasing use of technology by the Home Team. He wanted to know how much has been invested in this over the past five years, what tangible returns have been seen, and how the Home Team Science and Technology Agency set up in 2019 has helped to develop cost-effective capabilities. Mr Murali also suggested a review of legislation to enable the Internal Security Department to prevent the proliferation of cases of young people being self-radicalised through access to harmful online content. Finally, he asked how the police intend to leverage a new scheme to encourage companies to hire ex-offenders, called the Uplifting Employment Credit, to help former inmates stay crime- and drug-free.
