Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Pritam Singh on criteria for citizenship
When granting new citizenships, Singapore should seek individuals who have a long-term commitment to the country - not those who do not want to live here but only want the power of the Singapore passport and a safe and secure environment for their assets and wealth, who are reluctant for their sons to do National Service, or who see Singapore citizenship as a stepping-stone to another country. Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh made this point in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). He asked the Government to share more details on how new citizenships are granted, noting that apart from publicly revealed criteria such as economic contribution, educational qualifications, family profile and length of stay in Singapore, there are aspects of the process that are currently “opaque”.
