Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Pritam Singh on US-China tension causing possible “fissures” in Singapore

02:25 Min

Amid increasing tension in US-China ties, Taiwan is likely to be a focus of contention, said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). He asked how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assesses the Taiwan question - is it a red line and will it force Singapore to choose a side? Mr Singh said Singapore’s external environment and its multiracial character mean that its social compact can be susceptible to fissures and cracks because of geopolitical tensions. He said “we should not shy away from saying that we are Singaporeans first, while recognising and honouring our ethnic and racial realities”. This distinction, he said, will be critical in building up Singapore's psychological readiness for unpredictable US-China relations.
