Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Raj Joshua Thomas on legal aid and law firms of the future

03:08 Min

With the Public Defender’s Office (PDO) taking over some functions of Pro Bono SG, will the Ministry of Law continue funding Pro Bono SG in the long term and if so, how will it ensure that it is not providing double funding to a Government body and an external private organisation carrying out similar functions? How will the PDO continue to engage volunteer lawyers to ensure that the spirit of giving back continues to thrive in the industry, especially when it comes to criminal aid? These questions were raised by NMP Raj Joshua Thomas in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). Noting that law firms of the future will be driven by technology, innovation and efficiency, he asked if the industry transformation map will be refreshed to cater for this, and if the Bar exam syllabus might be reviewed to incorporate how lawyers can use technology. He also asked how Singapore’s law firms stand in new areas of practice such as in digital tokens and currencies.
