Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Shahira Abdullah on support for scam victims
Scam victims suffer more than just financial losses. It often takes a toll on them physically, mentally and socially and many may be too embarrassed to seek help. NMP Shahira Abdullah highlighted this concern in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). Building upon the anti-scam centre set up last year, she proposed having a "one-stop unit" that collaborates with relevant agencies and professionals dedicated to assist scam victims. She said the unit could ensure that vulnerable groups such as the deaf who may not be able to utilise phone hotlines can get timely help. The unit can also address the financial, mental and emotional needs of victims promptly.
