Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Sitoh Yih Pin on the threat of scams
The total amount of money cheated from scams rose from S$632 million in 2021 to S$660.7 million in 2022, while the number of scams and cybercrime cases increased by about 25 per cent from 26,886 in 2021 to 33,669 in 2022. MP Sitoh Yih Pin cited these "astounding" statistics from the police in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). He noted that scams involving seniors amounted to only 8.8 per cent of all cases while 79.4 per cent of cases involved individuals between 10 and 49 years old. He said that given the insidious threat of scams and the disproportionate harm they bring to victims, the Government should take steps to augment its support of the police by legislation or otherwise. He wanted to know what steps the Government is taking to address the threat of scams in the community and whether it has plans to strengthen legislation to combat scams.
