Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 2: Vikram Nair on legislation to tackle online criminal activity

01:40 Min

Are there gaps in the existing legislative framework to deal with cybercrime and how will a new framework that the Ministry of Home Affairs said it was working on last year relate to current legislation? MP Vikram Nair asked this question in Parliament on Monday (Feb 27). He noted that cybercrime as a whole is on the rise. This covers two categories - cyber-dependent offences such as hacking and website defacement, as well as cyber-enabled offences such as scams, cyber harassment and illegal online gambling. Currently, different offences are covered by different pieces of legislation including the Computer Misuse Act, the Penal Code and the Protection from Harassment Act.
