Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Carrie Tan on outdoor and nature-based learning
Make outdoor and nature-based learning the main approach to early and primary education. This was the call put forward by MP Carrie Tan in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28). She noted that more private preschools are increasingly incorporating such learning for children and the benefits include better physical development, improved mental well-being and higher intuitive intelligence. Given new climate realities and the future green economy, she said the young must also be equipped to be “nature natives” and not just digital natives. Ms Tan shared suggestions on how to kickstart this alternative method of education. Interested educators could be sent for training in naturalistic pedagogy to pioneer a curriculum for pre- and primary school. Schools that were meant to be closed down due to low demand could be redesigned to pilot this model. Parents could then voluntarily sign their children up if they are keen.
