Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Denise Phua on supporting students with special educational needs
Eighty per cent of children with special educational needs (SEN) attend mainstream schools in Singapore, but the educational outcomes of these students are currently inconsistent. MP Denise Phua shared this observation in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28) and made suggestions to better support students in special education (SPED) schools. She urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to extend the formal SPED school exit age to 21, beyond the current age of 18. She also called for a review of salaries to attract and retain good staff and expand the pool of educators by allowing MOE and National Institute of Education candidates to apply to join SPED schools.
