Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Hoon Hian Teck on achieving vision of Manufacturing 2030

05:26 Min

Singapore’s vision for Manufacturing 2030 is to be a global business, innovation and talent hub for advanced manufacturing. However, while the sector’s share of total GDP has stayed around 20 per cent, its share of total resident employment has been on a steady decline and now hovers around 12 per cent. Making the point in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28), NMP Hoon Hian Teck said Singapore will have to create the manpower to achieve its Manufacturing 2030 vision. Central to this will be a supply of workers who make the career choice to work in manufacturing, as well as a supply of innovators. Prof Hoon asked if more scholarships, internships and exposure can be given to students at different stages of the education ladder to discover if they have the passion for innovating. Those who face financial constraints will also need support to achieve their potential.
