Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Jamus Lim on funding Singapore international schools in ASEAN capital cities

03:11 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28), MP Jamus Lim called for the Ministry of Education (MOE) to support the funding of international schools located in all major regional capitals within ASEAN. These schools should offer the full Singaporean curriculum, similar to that of any local MOE school, from kindergarten through to the secondary school level, he suggested. He noted that students attending these schools will most likely be Singaporeans and that providing them with a subsidised Singaporean education would reduce the frictions experienced by parents in moving their families to a different country. He said that this offers positive incentives for local professionals to relocate and thereby upgrade their experience and exposure to the region, which is often cited as a reason for middle managers being skipped over for a promotion.
