Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Louis Chua on Primary 1 registration
“We can and we must take bolder steps to simplify the Primary 1 registration framework and make it truly accessible for all” - this was the call from MP Louis Chua in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28). He said building a fairer and more inclusive society has to start with children and with primary schools where “social mixing has arguably been on the decline”. Mr Chua said he is heartened by the Ministry of Education’s decision to tweak P1 registration to allow more children with no family connections to get into a school if it is near their home. However, he feels the change does not go far enough. If inherited parental privilege is protected at the expense of another child being turned away from a school that is only a few hundred metres from their home, can Singapore truly say that its system is fair for all, he asked.
