Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Melvin Yong on enhancing consumer protection

03:20 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28), MP Melvin Yong proposed three ways to strengthen consumer protection in the current inflationary environment. One way is to expand mandatory pre-payment protection to contractors in the renovation industry. He also suggested a cooling-off period for the beauty industry, similar to that for insurance and direct sales. He said a mandatory cooling-off period will address the problem of pressure sales tactics by giving consumers sufficient time to consider or reconsider their purchases. Mr Yong also called for seller verification on e-marketplaces to ensure that sellers are accountable for their product listings, reduce the risk of scams and aid resolution of consumer disputes.
