Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Tin Pei Ling on building and protecting Singapore for digital future
In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28), Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Communications and Information. Following that, MP Tin Pei Ling highlighted the challenges and opportunities that the digital future presents. She said a wise and competent Government will be required to harness the power of technology to build Singapore, while putting in place guardrails to protect its people. She stressed the need to protect people online, adding that this must be calibrated carefully to avoid inadvertently suffocating innovation or overburdening well-meaning businesses. She wanted to know how the Government will ensure a good balance between protection and facilitation. She also asked for an update on the progress of the implementation of the Online Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill.
