Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Wan Rizal on better protection for teachers
Teaching can be challenging yet rewarding, and requires a great deal of physical, emotional and mental energy. It can sometimes result in stress and even burnout. MP Wan Rizal, who is also an adviser to the Singapore Teachers’ Union, said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28). He made several suggestions to better protect teachers. First, the Ministry of Education could establish clearer guidelines on work hours and designated times for teachers. One way is to introduce a “whitespace” for marking, lesson planning and student guidance or counselling. Second, teachers could be given agency to negotiate deployment to achieve win-win outcomes for themselves and their schools. Third, MOE could set a zero-tolerance policy with clear protocols for handling harassment or abuse of teachers.
