Are current measures to mitigate the effects of rising food prices sufficient, or are there other factors impacting food affordability that still need to be addressed? MP Cheryl Chan asked this question in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 1). She said many Singaporeans cannot comprehend the rising prices of hawker food as they feel the percentage increase always outstrips increases in Government taxes and business costs. With new hawker centres being built, Ms Chan asked if there will be lower rental costs for stallholders or if the current bidding model needs to be tweaked. She also questioned if there will be enough hawkers joining the trade to sustain it.
