Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 4: Edward Chia on greater recognition of skills

03:52 Min

More can be done to address the growing wage disparity between graduates and non-graduates, said MP Edward Chia in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 1). He said a widening gap can lead to negative outcomes and mitigating this does not mean devaluing paper qualifications, but to have equal recognition for skills and competencies. He added that such a change will require human resource (HR) managers and employers to take the first step. The COVID-19 pandemic and an increasingly complex economy have also meant the role of a HR manager must significantly evolve for “more nuanced recruitment”. Mr Chia called for an Industry Transformation Map for the HR sector to support HR professionals in their expanded role.
