Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 4: Hoon Hian Teck on impact of robots and AI on jobs and wages

05:33 Min

Robots may threaten jobs and wages if they result in automation replacing human workers. However, they can also provide opportunities that benefit workers, said NMP Hoon Hian Teck in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 1). He painted three scenarios - where artificial intelligence (AI) is harnessed to create new complementary tasks that raise labour productivity; where robots stimulate investment in conventional machines, equipment and physical structures, which then exerts an upward pull on wage rates; and where the arrival of robots leads to workers shifting from participating in production to participating in innovative activity.
