Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 6: Carrie Tan on tapping former beneficiaries to volunteer for ComLink
Former beneficiaries of various social service organisations are a resource that can be tapped to address a shortage of volunteer “befrienders” as the ComLink support programme is scaled up. MP Carrie Tan made this observation in Parliament on Friday (Mar 3). She said these former beneficiaries can relate to families in rental housing as they have likely experienced similar challenges before. They can thus be effective in building trust and rapport and will be able to provide honest and useful feedback to address implementation gaps which officers from public agencies may not be aware of. Offering them a stipend for their time and contributions will also help their financial adequacy, while paying it forward will enhance their self-esteem and dignity and make them positive role models.
