Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 6: Melvin Yong on strengthening families and marriages
Families are the bedrock of Singapore society, said MP Melvin Yong in Parliament on Friday (Mar 3). He asked how the Ministry of Social and Family Development plans to better support families to stay strong and whether programmes such as Families for Life have been effective. He also noted that there was a sharp spike in divorce applications filed in 2021. He asked if the ministry will encourage more couples to attend pre-marital marriage preparation programmes and increase the quantity and quality of such programmes. Mr Yong also encouraged the ministry to expand its Golden Jubilee Wedding Celebrations which honour couples who have been married for 50 years. In fact, he suggested organising celebrations for marriages at every 10-year milestone.
